One of life’s heartbreaking stories is the one about the promising athlete stricken with a disease. Our culture, right or wrong, mythologizes athletes as somehow superhuman or statistically immune. Most top athletes believe it, too. Until a diagnosis comes in and they are brought back to reality.
Drew Beckie is one of those athletes. A professional soccer player and Canadian youth international, he was diagnosed with a major heart issue at age 27. Still Defending is Drew’s story — coming to grips with the diagnosis, the impact of the disease on his body, and what steps he needed to take to return to the field. Through it all, Drew’s character guides his way, and in the end, you can’t help but root for someone with such a good heart.
