Playing for Peace tells the story of Israeli club HaPoel Be’er Sheva, located in the Israeli city of Be’er Sheva. The city has an equal number of Muslim and Jewish residents and sits only 20 km south of the West Bank.
Hapoel Be’er Sheva was plagued by a 40-year championship drought until a new owner, Alona Barkat, came in with a vision of tolerance and acceptance. With this vision, Alona, the first woman owner of an Israeli soccer team, brought the club their long-awaited championship. Playing for Peace follows the journey of the team as they prepare for the UEFA Champions League match against Turkish giants Besiktas, and uses the preparation and the match as the backdrop for a larger narrative about football’s ability to unite people.
Since 2001, America SCORES Bay Area's mission has been to empower underserved youth to lead healthy lifestyles, be engaged and collaborative students and have the confidence and character to make a difference in the world. Our program consists of three components - soccer to teach teamwork; poetry to allow creative expression, wordplay, and public speaking, so students discover their individual, distinct voices, all while building critical literacy skills and self-confidence; and through a semester-long service-learning curriculum, the ability to make a positive, impactful contribution to their community. SCORES relies on a community of caring adults, partner organizations, and philanthropy to deliver excellent and accessible programs.
